I make a living as a private tutor for the LSAT (the US and Canadian law school entrance exam), for the SAT and ACT (college admissions exams), and math. I started tutoring for a prominent test prep company when I was an undergrad twenty years ago and have been tutoring solo for the past ten years. I now also help others jumpstart their own private tutoring businesses.

Along the way, in my conversations with students and their families, I’ve noticed that over and over again, my clients have told me that my professionalism as a tutor was one key reason they chose to work with me rather than another tutor.

Professionalism, of course, has a lot to do with attitude, responsiveness, preparedness, authenticity, and general composure. It’s a way of showing that you take your job seriously. And it’s a promise that you’ll therefore take your students seriously as well.

But that’s not to say that professionalism comes across ONLY in attitudes and interactions. In fact, in this post, I would like to share a few specific tools…
